In 2013 Norwegian Hull Club established a Loss Prevention Committee that meets twice a year to share experience in loss prevention work and discuss safety issues.
Within the energy segment, several of our clients signaled an interest for a subgroup of this committee with specific focus on FPSOs.
The Club’s Global Energy team, in cooperation with the Loss Prevention team, therefore arranged the first FPSO Loss Prevention & Knowledge Sharing Session in London 7th and 8th February. As facilitators, we introduced the session by combining academic research on accidents, with a review of our FPSO claims statistics over the last 10 years.
Key insurance personnel from the Club's FPSO members and main clients, including senior technical and marine managers, were invited to the session. The idea was to gather informally for one full day to share experience and lessons learned – and through knowledge sharing, improve in areas of common interest outside the natural and healthy competition parameters in the business otherwise.
The main topics addressed were risk evaluation; having a holistic approach to risk; using the bow tie model; mooring in harsh environment; and lay-up of FPSOs.
When sharing lessons learned, our clients gave a brief description of their experience with:
- handling losses
- cause
- (emergency) response
- repair options
- consequences
- awareness
- preparations
- possible improvements for subsequent discussion within the group
Based on the interest from those in attendance and the eagerness to participate in an open dialogue in order to share knowledge and experience, we consider that our first FPSO sharing session was a successful addition to the Club’s loss prevention activities and services. Based on the initial feedback from our clients it is likely that we will arrange similar sessions in the future – both within the FPSO segment and other business segments of the Norwegian Hull Club.
Questions regarding the committee and its work can be directed to our Loss Prevention and Emergency Response department.
